VISION
The extraordinary natural and human environment of the Prek Toal area has inspired Osmose’s vision: it is the best asset for the development of local communities. Through its interventions, Osmose initiates, tests and accompanies new modes of use and sustainable development of local natural resources.
GOAL
Osmose’s goal is to combine protection of Prek Toal bird colonies with socio-economic benefits for lake populations. The Osmose approach integrates awareness activities (environmental education) and income-generating activities (ecotourism, crafts) with disadvantaged families, including former bird collectors.
CONCRETE ACTIONS
Ecotourism visits to the bird sanctuary and floating village of Prek Toal are part of the integrated project.

The Prek Toal flooded forest was designated in 1997 as the central area (21,000 ha) of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve because of its botanical diversity and the threatened bird colonies that nest there. Since 2015, Prek Toal has also been listed as a Ramsar site, aiming at protecting wetlands of international importance.
